Study House, Eckernförde

The town of Eckernförde in Schleswig-Holstein is a popular tourist destination in northern Germany. It was here that Günter Haß founded his architectural practice and planned the residential building for his university friend in the first years of his self-employment. The house, built in 1968, was designed with a sweeping view over the Bay of Eckernförde.

Residential building with sweeping views over the Bay of Eckernförde

The extreme slope required a skilful building layout over two storeys. Architect Günter Haß drew inspiration for the design from the so-called ‘case study’ houses from the USA, most of which were built in the mid-1950s by renowned architects such as Richard Neutra.

Inspiration from the ‘Case Study’ houses

The house is characterised by clear forms and a keen sense of place. Entirely in the style of objectivity, the house is based on a simple construction principle with an open floor plan and flat roof. The large glass panes allow a wide view of the Baltic Sea. At the same time, however, the exposed location prevents unwanted views.

The building still has a modern, timeless appearance with its simple design. The spacious, covered terrace on the upper floor is a particular highlight.

Harmonious connection between inside and outside

A striking feature of the house is the flowing connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The floor-to-ceiling windows and the covered terrace convey the feeling of being directly connected to the surrounding nature and the expansive sea view. The open floor plan allows daylight to flow deep into the interior of the building and creates a pleasant living atmosphere characterised by the simple elegance of the architecture. To this day, the house is considered an example of the harmonious combination of functionality and aesthetics that keeps the architectural heritage of the ‘Case Study’ movement alive.
