Conversion of an old doctor’s villa into an architect’s office

In 1965, architect Günter Haß went into business for himself in his home town of Eckernförde. While he managed the first five years of his professional life mainly on his own, the office grew increasingly larger at the beginning of the 1970s. In the search for a suitable property for the offices, a doctor’s villa was acquired at Kieler Straße 71 in Eckernförde.

Larger premises through own extension

Due to the very positive order situation, an extension was added to the building in 1974, creating more space for new employees.

This consists of a spacious, modern, single-storey timber and glass brick building. With its flat roof, the extension is clearly subordinate to the existing building and closes the gap on Am Exer.

The use of lots of glass signals openness and provides a view into the offices. The use of bricks as a wall material also created a reference to the surrounding buildings.

Steel pipes as a functional design element in the interior spaces

The reception desk was located directly at an atrium and was still equipped with a typewriter and calculator at the time. The employees’ desks were littered with paper plans drawn up on large drawing tables suspended from the ceiling – it was not until the late 1990s that the pen was increasingly replaced by newer technologies. The hanging elements were attached to round steel tubes and provided additional space for material and color studies as well as other design processes.
