Old Seminar (Tax Office), Eckernförde

The Old Seminary in Eckernförde is an outstanding example of historical architecture. Built in the Neo-Renaissance style, the building, which was erected in 1781, is characterised by its characteristic brick ornamentation, which was typical of the period. Originally used as a royal teachers’ seminary, it later served various administrative and educational purposes. In 1980, the building was listed as a historical monument.
In 1982, our architectural office, headed by Günter Haß, took on the comprehensive refurbishment of this important listed building.

Deconstruction and restoration according to the historical model

In the course of the renovation, an inappropriate storey that was added later after a fire was removed in order to restore the original architectural form of the Old Seminary. The roof shape was reconstructed on the basis of historical models and restored to its authentic state. The striking façades with their typical period brick ornamentation were carefully restored, allowing the building to regain its historical splendour.

Interior design – combining tradition and modernity

In addition to the external measures, the interior of the Old Seminary has also been completely refurbished. Historical elements were restored or recreated with great care in order to preserve the historical atmosphere. At the same time, the building was fitted out in a modern style for its new use as a tax office. This careful combination of historical and contemporary aspects allows the building to be used functionally without compromising its listed character.
