The Baltic seaside resort of Eckernförde combines the advantages of city and nature in a unique way. With short distances between the harbour, beach and old town, the town has developed from a centre of the German fishing industry into a popular holiday destination and place to live. Between 1981 and 1983, we planned a modern residential neighbourhood for Wobau Schleswig-Holstein between Reeperbahn and Gartenstraße. The complex comprises 36 flats suitable for the elderly and an underground car park, providing urban and comfortable living.

Architecture in harmony with the old town
The design of the residential neighbourhood places great emphasis on integration into the existing cityscape. The reddish-brown brick façades, typical of the northern German region, and the roofs covered with red clay tiles echo the architectural features of the historic old town. This harmonious combination of tradition and modernity gives the residential complex a timeless aesthetic that fits in perfectly with its surroundings.

Quality of living through light and space
The facades are divided by white windows and suspended balconies, which create lively views in and out. Floor-to-ceiling windows ensure rooms are flooded with light, while classic windows with balustrades add variety to the façade. Interiors offer exciting views of the city and are characterised by clear lines and a pleasant atmosphere.

Barrier-free living for the aged
Particular attention was paid to designing the flats to be suitable for the elderly. Low-barrier floor plans and generous room layouts allow for comfortable living in old age without having to compromise on aesthetics and functionality. The central location between the beach, harbour and old town promotes an active and varied lifestyle in harmony with the surroundings.
