The indoor swimming pool in Harrislee was designed as an addition to the school and sports campus as part of a non-open, single-phase building design competition. The single-storey building is harmoniously integrated into the sloping terrain and opens up invitingly to the neighboring Entensee lake. Large areas of glazing and a wooden façade characterize the design, while the characteristic folding roof and V-shaped columns form the architectural highlight. A sustainable energy concept with a heat pump, biogas CHP and photovoltaics ensures low energy consumption, supplemented by heat recovery from gray water. The outdoor area with seating by the lake and a diversely designed sauna courtyard offers recreational opportunities and extends the range of uses. The indoor swimming pool combines functionality, sustainability and aesthetic architecture and sets new standards for public buildings.

The comprehensive school, as a school for longer joint learning in all-day operation, is growing steadily in terms of pupil numbers. For this reason, but also for energy-related reasons, the city of Verl intended to expand and upgrade its school. To this end, a concept was to be developed for the structural expansion of the usable educational space and the necessary adaptation work in the existing buildings. In addition, an indoor swimming pool was to be built on the grounds of the school center.
In the competition, the municipality of Peenemünde planned the construction of a new “Haus des Gastes” in a prominent location in the town center as a link between the harbor promenade and the museum area. The building was also to function as a new entrance area for the Historical-Technical Museum (HTM).
The subject of the competition was the planning of two new sea bridges for the municipality of Scharbeutz. The existing piers in Scharbeutz and the village of Haffkrug, which belongs to Scharbeutz, were in need of renovation and were to be replaced by a new building. The aim of the competition was to obtain innovative, unusual proposals for both piers that fulfill the classic function of being able to move out to sea. Furthermore, they were to offer a range of uses for the various age and user groups and impress with their unmistakable design.
After decades of operation, the Hohenwestedt outdoor pool was in need of considerable refurbishment due to its age and use. In conjunction with the upcoming renovation, a future-proof concept was to be found to expand the range of facilities and improve the quality of stay. Existing deficits in the available space had to be rectified in the floor plan or by extending the building. Barrier-free use of the outdoor pool was only possible to a limited extent and had to be rethought.
The task of the competition was to find ideas for the development of the harbor tip at the Old Harbor in Wismar, taking into account the prominent location of the property and the special circumstances of the site as a World Heritage Site. The competition entries were to present a convincing and approvable concept in terms of urban planning, architecture, functionality and economy for a contemporary property development with vacation apartments, commerce, gastronomy and wellness area, which appropriately takes into account the character of the property in front of and next to the brick-faced listed buildings and at the same time supports an attractive effect on vacation guests with extraordinary architecture and well thought-out apartment floor plans from the 1st floor and attractive commercial space on the ground floor.
The Maritim pier, which dates back to 1908 and was replaced by a new building in 1976, has been welcoming locals and guests to stroll, relax or enjoy a leisurely chat on one of its benches ever since. The existing pier was dilapidated and once again in need of renovation. The municipality of Timmendorfer Strand therefore decided to replace it with a new building of outstanding quality and to find a high-quality solution by means of a competition.
The existing kiosks under the Rathausarkaden on Hamburg’s Rathausmarkt were to be demolished and replaced by new buildings for Hamburg Tourismus GmbH (HHT) and other users. A new and innovative tourist information center and space for external partners were to be created in a prominent location in the heart of Hamburg. A visit to the tourist information center was to become an experience for guests and Hamburg residents with a mix of services.
A visitor and information center with a focus on environmental education, visitor information and visitor guidance was to be realized as a central contact point in the national park at Ruhestein, a pass on the Black Forest High Road at an altitude of approx. 900 m. Around 3,000 m² of usable space was planned for the exhibition, education, catering and associated ancillary rooms. Part of the national park administration was already housed at Ruhestein in the listed “Villa Klumpp”. Adjacent to this building and/or within the planning area for the visitor and information center approx. 150 m away, around 30 workplaces were to be accommodated in a separate new building and/or integrated into the visitor and information center.
The development of the Hanseatic city of Rostock on and near the water is a key objective of urban development. The existing potential of the waterfront in the immediate vicinity of the historic old town is to be used to a particular extent for urban development. The redevelopment of the historic inner city area has largely been completed and the development of the city center core area with its diverse retail structure is well underway. Against this background, the Hanseatic City of Rostock planned a comprehensive urban structuring of the northern inner city area (the entire Bussebart/Stadthafen area). The main task of the development process was the development of an urban planning framework for the area under consideration and the classification of the new construction of a four-spade theater. The aim of the new municipal theater building was to create a visible symbol of cultural civic life and commitment for many decades and thus for several generations to come.
The open development is characteristic of Südstadt, and the resulting large open spaces are highly valued and used. Along the Karl-Krull-Straße there are large trees, mostly birch trees, which currently characterize the streetscape and form the spatial conclusion. This quality that has grown on the outside must be preserved.
The building cubatures fit into the surroundings and are oriented along Krull-Strasse. On the other hand, the buildings are oriented towards the sun, with particular attention being paid to the even lighting of the apartments and the shadows cast on the open spaces. This results in a mediation of the 2 new structures between the existing buildings. This in turn enables the preservation and continuation of the pathways, as well as the creation of a focal point in the district, which can be the main intersection of the pedestrian paths and thus a meeting point and rest area at the same time.
For the urban redevelopment of the area between Eggerstedtstraße and Schlossstraße from Burgstraße to Alter Markt, a competition was launched as an expert opinion procedure on the basis of an urban design for a particularly prominent building in the immediate vicinity of Kiel Castle.
The new urban structure emphasizes the building as a solitaire. At the same time, the strict and calm design of the edges to Schlossstrasse, Fischerstrasse and Schlossplatz are necessary in order to contain the spaces and not become a spectacular competitor to Kiel Castle.
The building follows this concept consistently and responds to the planned restructuring of the urban space with clear edges on three sides, while the wave-shaped south façade defines the NDR square on the one hand and at the same time opens up a view across it to the fjord.
The office of Brücke Rendsburg-Eckernförde e.V. was to be housed in a new building. A plot of land in the Büdesldorf industrial estate was earmarked for this purpose. The new office building was to provide office space and associated special office space for around 60 workplaces. The awarding authority aimed to develop the entire site into a campus. For this reason, the participants were expected to consider not only the core task of designing the new office but also the overall context of the site and to plan the outdoor space accordingly.
The entrance level with bistro, store and lecture room is spanned by three domed structures. These domes are lightweight constructions and symbolize the “cells” of mitosis. Nature has produced ingenious, viable and aesthetic forms that serve as a model. The reference to the forms and structures of nature is not a plagiarism, but a necessary borrowing in order to develop an intelligent, aesthetically pleasing and economical construction. The interior is flooded with daylight through the transparent outer skin.
When the light conditions are reversed at dusk, the cell membranes become luminous landmarks.

The “green ribbon” is a defining element both for the external form and design of the building and for the quality and varied design of the working and recreational areas inside.
The generous and significant glazing of the “hanging gardens” connected by the “Green Lounge” of the staggered storey are a defining design element of the façades and synonymous with the humane working atmosphere, but also with the environmentally conscious attitude of Förde Sparkasse and its employees. These design statements are complemented by the office façades, which are clearly and simply structured.

The design emerged as the winner of the 2009 invitation competition and was realized in the following years. The “Am Park” retirement and nursing home was to be extended by 2 groups of 22 residents each. The architects completed one of the angular wings of the building to create a ring around an inner courtyard. Two thirds of the inner courtyard became an agora, or marketplace, thanks to a glass roof. Thanks to its intensive greening and varied design, the hall has a very high lingering quality and thus forms the public center of the building. The hall is a conceptually roofed and enclosed outdoor space that has been intensively greened.
In the fast-paced and hectic times in which we live, a place of rest and relaxation is more important than ever. Everyone needs a place to switch off and relax, to find themselves again. The Meßmer TeeUniversum in Hamburg’s Hafencity offers just such a place. Here you can sit back with a cup of tea, enjoy the peace and quiet and recharge your batteries. Separable areas provide the necessary privacy for tea enjoyment and a feel-good environment invites you to linger. The soft, indirect light and the harmonious lighting atmosphere it creates also contribute to this. The colors from the Meßmer logo predominate in the color scheme to make the company recognizable. In addition, an exhibition provides information about the company’s history and philosophy as well as the quality and know-how of the Meßmer brand.

The heart and natural center of every coastal town is the harbor. The further development of the harbour as a crystallization point is logical and consistent.
The basis of the design is the expansion of the marina (approx. 8,000 square meters) through the construction of a pier, which will simultaneously fortify the harbor entrance and be a striking landmark. The extended marina offers approx. 74 berths. The infrastructure is housed inside the pier.

The facade of the new hotel and health center at the central bus station in Kiel reflects the maritime history of the city of Kiel.
On the one hand, sailing with its lightness and speed, the purity of the sail surfaces reflecting brilliantly white in the sun, the tranquillity and the feeling of being one with the sea. On the other hand, steel shipbuilding with its hardness and sobriety, the noise, the dirt and the work that precedes the completion of a modern ship.
The house in its prominent position in Kiel symbolically welcomes visitors to the city with both facets.
Demographic change is unstoppable and the topic of “living in old age” is becoming increasingly important. As part of a competition, a high-quality residential complex was planned in Bargteheide. The main building on Bahnhofstrasse accommodates central administrative and supply functions and marks the start of the entire quarter. Three-storey buildings form the end to the north-east, while the rest of the development consists of terraced houses grouped in such a way that the gardens connect with the central green space and open up to the south. This creates meeting spaces that facilitate social contact with benches in front of the houses.
The planned harbor edge development in Greifswald is located on the northern border of the old town. The aim is to restore a clear urban edge while at the same time continuing the urban structure in the historic block structure. The meandering design of the buildings within the boundaries of the city blocks ensures that the city, harbor and adjacent recreational areas to the north are interlinked while preserving the urban layout.

As part of a competition, a development was developed for the conversion of the former military site in Flensburg Sonwik, which includes 110 luxury apartments, office space and restaurants. The planned building complex spans the harbor area of Sonwik together with the water houses, thus preserving and reinforcing the harbor atmosphere of the new residential quarter. The bar projecting over the street and water forms a square with the bar jutting back from the quay edge: the central point of the Sonwik area.

The design of the competition for the new concept of the Lower Saxony State Parliament in Hanover envisaged an architectural optimization of the existing building with the plenary hall. A permeable structure that allows views in and out and thus makes the basic democratic idea of openness and transparency tangible was envisaged.

An additional office wing and a cafeteria were to be designed for the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. The design envisaged that the size, cubature and ground plan of the extension would refer to the individual structures of the existing building ensemble, which are staggered in terms of arrangement and height. Despite its ability to be extended by a third storey, the new building remained below the height of the Richter building as the most important component of the overall complex.
