Extension in a cramped, listed enviroment

The extension to the Academy building in Kirchenstraße could only be built on the cramped and steeply sloping site between the two DRK buildings. Both buildings are monuments with a brick and a rendered façade. The requirement for the quality of the extension was therefore to design a building with façades of the same quality as the two monuments, but with a clearly different materiality and Design.

Clear cube with glass transition to the old building

A clear cube was designed and realized, which, with the staircase as a transparent link, is minimized and delicately connected to the old building in Kirchenstraße. The height differences between the storeys were naturally bridged by the free-standing staircase.

Sustainable and resusable construction

The cube was constructed as a skeleton structure with prefabricated ceilings, minimizing the use of materials and making it removable and reusable. The façade of the building is constructed with vertically arranged rhombus strips throughout. The rhombus strips were also planked flush with the rest of the facade with vertically rotating sun and privacy protection slats to protect against overheating and views. The rotating slats allow the view from the inside to the outside at all times. The diagonally arranged rhombus strips of the opaque facade and the rotating slats create a changing image from different locations.

The sustainable and reusable construction with the homogeneous and enveloping wooden facade, supplemented by an air heat pump for heating and comprehensive PV modules on the roof minimize the building’s CO2 footprint.

The DRK Academy is a pioneering example of how the use of wood as a natural and design-defining material can be used to realize economical construction and operation while taking into account the preservation of historical monuments and sustainability.
